One of the most common questions we’re asked is: how can I support my dog’s joints naturally without relying on pharmaceuticals?
For some dogs, especially those with advanced arthritis, it will be necessary to use pharmaceuticals like NSAIDs (Metacam, Previcox, etc.) and other medications, as pain relief is always a top priority.
However, these medications can cause unwanted side effects with prolonged use. For many dogs, though, a fresh diet rich in omega-3 oils, natural dietary supplements, and complementary therapies can help keep them supple and pain-free for many years or even for their entire lives.
Natural Joint Support Supplements
Here are some of the most effective natural supplements for joint support in dogs:
•Curcumin: Best in liposomal form or as Golden Paste; reduces inflammation at the cellular level.
•Boswellia: A powerful anti-inflammatory that works well with curcumin.
•Green Lipped Mussel (GLM): Rich in EPA, DHA and ETA (a rare omega-3 that blocks inflammation). GLM extract is more potent and stable than freeze-dried powder.
•Ahiflower: A plant-based source of omega fatty acids, including stearidonic acid (SDA), which converts efficiently to EPA. Supports joint health and reduces inflammation.
•Glucosamine and Chondroitin: Found naturally in cartilage and may be less essential for raw-fed dogs consuming bone.
•PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide): A naturally occurring fatty acid compound that calms inflammation and supports the endocannabinoid system.
•Devil’s Claw: A herbal remedy with anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. (not suitable for pregnant dogs or those with ulcers).
•Bone Broth: Packed with glycosaminoglycans, amino acids and minerals to support joint repair.
•Collagen: Particularly type II collagen, which is the most beneficial for joint cartilage and connective tissue support.
•MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane): A sulphur-containing compound that supports joint flexibility and reduces inflammation.
•Hyaluronic Acid: Helps lubricate joints and maintain shock absorption.
•Eggshell membrane: Contains natural joint-supporting compounds like glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen, which help reduce joint pain in dogs.
•Alfalfa: A highly nutritious supplement, considered one of the best for arthritis, and safe for long-term use to ease arthritis in older dogs.
Complementary Therapies to Ease Joint Discomfort
Natural pain management goes beyond supplements. These therapies can be incredibly beneficial in reducing inflammation, improving mobility, and relieving stiffness:
•Red light therapy: Help reduce inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate pain by stimulating blood flow and cell regeneration in affected joints. (e.g. Photizo, HeaLED)
•Canine massage: Encourages circulation and eases muscular tension.
•Physiotherapy and hydrotherapy: Builds strength without strain on joints.
•Acupuncture: Can relieve pain and stimulate healing naturally.
•Chiropractic care: Helps maintain proper alignment and movement.
•Homeopathy: Offers gentle, individualised support for chronic joint conditions.
•CBD oil: Can help manage pain, inflammation, and stiffness.
What Causes Joint Pain in Dogs?
Joint pain in dogs is often the result of inflammation, injury, or degenerative joint disease such as osteoarthritis. It can stem from:
•Wear and tear on the joints over time
•Trauma or injury
•Hip or elbow dysplasia
•Autoimmune conditions
•Nutritional deficiencies
•Obesity placing excessive strain on the joints
Dogs may show signs of pain through limping, stiffness, reluctance to exercise, or licking joints.
How Inflammation Can Lead to Joint Disease
Inflammation is a natural part of the immune response, but when it becomes chronic, it starts to damage healthy joint tissue. In dogs with arthritis or other joint issues, the immune system mistakenly targets the joint, causing the breakdown of cartilage and resulting in pain, swelling, and decreased mobility.
Targeting inflammation naturally, before it causes irreversible joint damage, is one of the most effective long-term strategies for managing joint health.
Understanding the Risks of NSAIDs
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are commonly prescribed to manage joint pain, but they’re not without risk. Long-term use can cause:
•Stomach ulcers or digestive upset
•Liver or kidney damage
•Suppression of natural healing mechanisms
For this reason, many holistic vets and natural health advocates recommend trying natural anti-inflammatories and lifestyle changes first or alongside conventional medicine to reduce dependency.
Lifestyle Changes to Support Joint Health
The following lifestyle changes can play a powerful role in joint care:
•Feed a fresh, species-appropriate diet: Minimally processed raw or gently cooked food is naturally anti-inflammatory and supports healthy weight.
•Regular but appropriate exercise: Keeps joints mobile and muscles strong, but avoid overexertion, especially on hard surfaces.
•Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight puts pressure on joints and accelerates wear and tear.
•Minimise exposure to toxins: Switch to natural cleaning products and avoid lawn chemicals, which can disrupt immune health and worsen inflammation.
•Avoid over-vaccination: Excessive vaccination can trigger inflammatory responses and immune dysfunction.
•Support the gut: An imbalanced gut microbiome can contribute to systemic inflammation that impacts the joints.
Supporting your dog’s joint health naturally is not just about providing the right supplements but also adopting lifestyle changes that can reduce inflammation and protect their joints. By combining the right diet, natural therapies, and a healthy lifestyle, you can help keep your dog comfortable and pain-free for many years.
