Turmeric can very beneficial for your dog and super simple to make.

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin – which is essentially its active ingredient.

Curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, wound healing and anticancer activities. It can help with arthritis, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, gastrointestinal issues and more.

If we look at from a food energetics perspective. turmeric is a “warming” spice, so if your dog is always hot, seeming shade and cool floors turmeric may not be for them.

When adding in any new supplement consult your vet if you have any concerns and always start very slowly to see if it’s tolerated.

To make a small batch of fresh golden paste.

½ cup of Tumeric powder

¼ cup of Coconut oil

1½ tspn Ground black pepper

1- 1½ cups of Water (ideally OxyPet)

If you prefer, you can swap the coconut oil for MCT oil or ghee 👍

Method:

Mix the turmeric and 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Keep the rest of the water back incase you need to thin the paste.

Stir the mixture over a low heat for around 7 mins.

It should form a paste. If the paste gets too thick add more water. If it gets too thin add more turmeric and heat for an extra few mins.

Once your paste is thick and has been heated for the above amount of time, add the black pepper and oil and stir throughly.

Allow to cool and then place in a jar with a lid and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze into moulds to make it last longer.

I'd advise anyone thinking of making golden paste and giving to their dogs to join this group and read the files. Golden paste is amazing but there are some important things you need to know before feeding it to your dogs. Turmeric is not compatible with some medications. You should start off with very small amounts like a quarter of a teaspoon at first and slowly build up. Please always research first.

If we look at from a food energetics perspective turmeric is a “warming” spice, so if your dog is always hot, seeking shade and cool floors turmeric may not be for them as they are classed as a HOT dog.

Dosage: around a 1/4 of a teaspoon per 10kg dog.

Please start with small dosages, increase very slowly so you know its well tolerated.
