Chia seeds are the tiny seeds of the chia plant (Salvia hispanica), they range in colour from light brown to black. Native to Mexico and Guatemala, they were a staple food for the ancient Aztecs and Mayans. In fact, “chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength” as warriors would use them as fuel while running long distances or during battle. The seeds were highly valued for their medicinal and nutritional value.
More recently Chia seeds have moved into the spotlight as a Superfood.
If you’d like to read more about their fantastic nutritional properties, here are two interesting articles …
I like to give my dogs Chia seeds in the form of a gel; this is simply Chia seeds mixed with water. I make sure that the seeds that I buy are organic in order to minimise the amount of chemicals (in the form of pesticides and insecticides) to which our dogs are exposed.
This is how I make it - it couldn’t be more simple!
1. Place some Chia seeds to a small jam jar
2. Add some filtered water in the ratio of 1 part Chia seeds to 8 parts water
3. Give it a thorough stir, then pop the jam jar lid on and give it a good shake.
4. The mixture will have by now turned ‘gloopy’
And that’s it!
The gel will keep for a couple of weeks in a jar in the fridge, so don’t make too much at once. I like to add some to one of my dogs' meals about 4 times per week, in rotation with other healthy extras. I give approximately ½ a teaspoon per 10 Kg of body weight.
