If you’re looking to celebrate your dog’s birthday, gotcha/adoption day, or simply want to treat them for being their adorable, tail-wagging self, we’ve got the perfect recipe for you. This cake recipe is packed with nutritious ingredients and easy to make at home, no fancy dog bakery required.
Plus, it’s fully customisable for your pup’s dietary needs and preferences. You can even frost it with a little cream cheese and decorate it with natural treats for that extra wow factor.
Ingredients: What You’ll Need
All the ingredients in this recipe are safe, simple, and commonly found in your kitchen or local grocery store. Remember: quality matters, so go for fresh and organic where possible.
500g of minced meat — use your dog’s favorite
1 sweet potato, peeled and chopped
1 small courgette, grated
1 egg — helps bind everything together
1 tablespoon of chia seeds (optional) — a great source of omega-3s and fiber
Cream cheese (optional) — for frosting
Optional toppings: a few blueberries, carrot shavings, or your pup’s favorite natural treats
Method: How to Make the Cake
This recipe couldn’t be easier and is flexible enough to suit both cooked and raw feeders.
For a Cooked Version:
Preheat your oven to a low temperature (around 160°C / 320°F).
Cook and mash the sweet potato until soft and smooth. This will help bind the cake and add a touch of natural sweetness.
In a large mixing bowl, combine:
Your choice of raw minced meat
Grated courgette
Mashed sweet potato
Egg
Chia seeds (if using)
Mix everything together thoroughly until well combined.
Spoon the mixture into a lined loaf tin or cake tin, pressing down gently to level it out.
Bake for about 1 hour, or until the center is cooked through and the juices run clear.
Allow to cool completely before removing from the tin.
Optional: Frosting & Decoration
Once your cake has cooled, feel free to get fancy!
Spread a layer of cream cheese over the top like frosting.
Add natural toppings like blueberries, shredded carrot, or even a few dog-safe biscuits.
Want to go extra? Pipe the cream cheese using a piping bag for a bakery-style finish.
Raw Feeding Option
If your dog is on a raw diet, you can skip the cooking altogether:
Simply mix the raw mince, grated courgette, chia seeds (skip the sweet potato)
Mold it into a cake shape and refrigerate until firm.
Top with a layer of goat’s yogurt or cream cheese and serve chilled!
Pro Tips:
Portion wisely: While this cake is made from healthy ingredients, it’s still a treat. Feed in moderation based on your dog’s size and daily dietary needs.
Store leftovers: Keep any extras in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze individual slices for later use.
Make it mini: Use a muffin tray to make “pupcakes”, great for sharing with doggy friends at a party!
